Help Gazela Lead the Parade

posted in: Events, Gazela, News, Repairs | 0

In May 2018, the Penn’s Landing waterfront will be abuzz with Sail Philadelphia Tall Ships festivities. As Philadelphia’s resident tall ship, Gazela is slated to lead visiting tall ships in a parade-of-sail into her home port on the Delaware River. But January’s lengthy frigid weather spell struck hard in the engine room. After one of the coldest cold spells the Northeast has seen in a very long time, some crew members entered her engine room. To their horror, they found extensive systems damaged from the cold. Assessment and repairs are continuing and damage estimates exceed $15,000. Our beloved sailing ship floats dead in the water until all repairs are made.

Can Gazela Lead the Parade?
Without her engine room systems up and running, Philadelphia’s tall ship will not be able to proudly lead her own city’s parade.

We Need You! Click Here to Donate!
We are asking for your donation and support to help get Gazela ready for this very important event. Anything you can donate would be greatly appreciated. Funds will go directly to the repairs needed to get her ready.

Gazela at Historic Bristol Day on October 22

posted in: Crew Stories, Events, Gazela, News | 0

Gazela was the star attraction at the 41st annual Historic Bristol Day! On Friday, October 21, Gazela set sail from Philadelphia with a crew of about 20 volunteers, arriving at Bristol’s new wharf by early afternoon. That evening the crew and members of the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild Board welcomed the organizers of the event, Bristol Cultural & Historical Foundation, on board for a dinner reception, sponsored by the King George II Tavern.

Saturday morning dawned bright and clear, and the day started with a reception honoring Bristol businessman Sam Farruggio, who had sponsored the transportation of Gazela‘s current mizzen mast from Roseburg, Oregon. At 10:00am, Gazela opened the gangways for free tours, and for the next 6 hours the crew was proud to inform over 3,000 visitors about the ship and our work.
Gazela departed Bristol on Sunday, and is currently back at Penn’s Landing. The Guild and all of the volunteers want to extend a hearty thank you to Bristol for welcoming us into your community!

Setting sail training class aboard Gazela!

posted in: Events, Gazela, Training | 0
Lean all about setting sail aboard a tall ship! The volunteer crew of Gazela invite you to learn the arcane parts of sails, the ropes which control them, and the steps for setting and dousing the sails. Our instructor, Deb Peretz, learned these steps over 20 years ago and has since gone on to serve on other sailing ships and tugboats. She’ll provide handouts and personalized instruction to get you comfortable with pulling on ropes and working as a team. The last hour of class will consist of students responding to orders and setting and dousing at least four of the ship’s 16 sails.
Date: October 15, 9am-1pm
Location: Barkentine Gazela at Penn’s Landing
Admission is $60, which includes handouts, instruction, and tours
To purchase tickets, click here:  Sail Training Tickets
Please note that this is an outdoor event, so dress for the weather. If you have tender hands, you may choose to bring gloves. Gazela will not leave the dock for this class.

Gazela training sail on the Delaware River

Gazela’s all-volunteer crew practiced their sailing skills on September 10 during a day sail on the Delaware River. The sail also provided an opportunity for invited guests, including students from the Public History Program at Temple University, to experience what it was like to sail a historic wooden tall ship.
