Gazela at Historic Bristol Day on October 22

posted in: Crew Stories, Events, Gazela, News | 0

Gazela was the star attraction at the 41st annual Historic Bristol Day! On Friday, October 21, Gazela set sail from Philadelphia with a crew of about 20 volunteers, arriving at Bristol’s new wharf by early afternoon. That evening the crew and members of the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild Board welcomed the organizers of the event, Bristol Cultural & Historical Foundation, on board for a dinner reception, sponsored by the King George II Tavern.

Saturday morning dawned bright and clear, and the day started with a reception honoring Bristol businessman Sam Farruggio, who had sponsored the transportation of Gazela‘s current mizzen mast from Roseburg, Oregon. At 10:00am, Gazela opened the gangways for free tours, and for the next 6 hours the crew was proud to inform over 3,000 visitors about the ship and our work.
Gazela departed Bristol on Sunday, and is currently back at Penn’s Landing. The Guild and all of the volunteers want to extend a hearty thank you to Bristol for welcoming us into your community!

Lean all about setting sail aboard a tall ship! The volunteer crew of Gazela invite you to learn the arcane parts of sails, the ropes which control them, and the steps for setting and dousing the sails. Our instructor, Deb Peretz, learned these steps over 20 years ago and has since gone on to serve on other sailing ships and tugboats. She’ll provide handouts and personalized instruction to get you comfortable with pulling on ropes and working as a team. The last hour of class will consist of students responding to orders and setting and dousing at least four of the ship’s 16 sails.
Date: October 15, 9am-1pm
Location: Barkentine Gazela at Penn’s Landing
Admission is $60, which includes handouts, instruction, and tours

Please note that this is an outdoor event, so dress for the weather. If you have tender hands, you may choose to bring gloves. Gazela will not leave the dock for this class.

Gazela left her home port at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia for two day sails on the Delaware River in June. The first sail, on June 10, served as training for our all-volunteer crew, who spent the afternoon setting and dousing sails, as well practicing man overboard and fire drills. On June 17, guests were invited on board to learn more about Gazela and the work of the Guild to preserve and maintain her.

Seven Deadly Seas presents The Greater of Two Evils aboard Gazela on September 1 – 4

posted in: Events, Features, News | 0

Seven Deadly Seas, the amazing Pirate, Comedy, and Burlesque shows on the Tall Ship Gazela are back!

Seven Deadly Seas is a theater-in-the-round-and-under-the-stars experience that was listed in TimeOut New York’s newsletter as “Best of the Week”. Combining live music, elaborate props, original comedy, and stunning burlesque, Seven Deadly Seas is known for creating shows call back to old vaudeville times, while taking a fresh look at comedy, politics and “entertainment for grown-ups.”

As in previous shows in the series, The Greater of Two Evils explores current political events through the highly warped lens of real-life pirates Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonney, and Mary Reed. This time, our heroes awaken from one hell of a bender to discover they have made some questionable choices while under the influence. This much-too-merry band must now fight, sing, and strip their way out of the mess they’ve gotten themselves into. The show will be performed in the round aboard Gazela and will feature live music, dancing girls, sword fights, and a variety of classic vaudeville-style entertainment.

Proceeds will help support the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild’s efforts to restore and maintain the historic Tall Ship Gazela and Tug Jupiter.

Tickets can be purchased either online or at the door (cash only at door.) Thursday, September 1st will be a discounted preview night. VIP tickets will be available Friday through Sunday.
