Matt Dass began volunteering with the Guild last December and took the initiative to rebuild Gazela's donation box. He recalls how he was "called down to the fo'c'sle one day" and when being told how "it's quite old and means a lot to the Guild, it meant a lot to me to be trusted with it." Anyone who has seen the new donation box, can tell how much care he put into the design and reconstruction of it.
How did you hear about the Guild?
Spending most of my free time in my shop is cool but means an unhealthy amount of alone time, so I went looking for other places to do woodwork on Meetup and scrolled past PSPG a few times before deciding to click on it.
How did you get started in woodworking?
I learned the basics growing up in a family that does construction for a living. That got me my first full time job in a cabinet and millwork shop in 2013. At home we just used pine and oak. At the cabinet shop I learned about the countless other species available, what they're good for, and the journey they take from their native forest to the places where things are made.
What has been your favorite part about volunteering with PSPG?
Everybody at PSPG does something cool and they have a wealth of information on the subject to share. I thoroughly enjoy going aloft and going out on sails, but you really get to know the other volunteers doing the mundane tasks like cleaning and painting.
