The waterfront of Kensington and Fishtown in Philadelphia attracted a host of innovative and hardworking shipwrights from America's earliest days. As fleets transitioned from wooden-hulled sailboats to iron steamships, the families of Kensington's boatyards saw the birth of screw propulsion, revolutionizing the speed and reliability of ships forever afterword. The industrialization of the industry resulted in the waterfront creating the model of a modern navy yard replicated up and down the East Coast.
Author Gretchen M. Bell presents the history of maritime Kensington and the shipbuilders that defined Philadelphia's waterfront.
